I think I’ve used a water filter of some sort for my drinking water for close to 20 years now.  For most of that time, it was just a grocery store Brita filter with a cartridge that was usually outdated.

The first time I recall hearing about doing something more than your average store water filter was at a local little gym I went to right after my oldest son was born.  The owner was raving about the alkaline water machine he had gotten.  I looked into it a little more at the time, but decided it wasn’t right for us at that time, as we were in a rental, and moving very soon.

My mom had gotten a reverse osmosis water filter for their kitchen. Then I learned from the hundreds of people talking about the Berkey water system, which I never could figure out where to put that thing. I liked that they were both great at removing the chlorine and fluoride from the water.  (Fluoride has toxic effects - especially for the pineal gland.  This can have far reaching effects on the glandular/hormonal system especially)
I considered these options, and many others, but didn’t really feel right about the fact that they all seemed to remove all the mineral content from the water.  When we don’t have minerals in our water, the water will actually draw minerals out of our tissue, which can leave us feeling depleted - like someone shut off the power switch.  Many people overcome this by adding a bit of sea salt into their water to replenish the minerals.

While these solutions seem to be functional for drinking water, they still leave a massive gap in the water we are exposed to:  none of these solutions seems to address the bathing, cleaning, toothbrushing, handwashing, etc water we come in contact with.

Did you know we actually absorb at least as much water through our skin as we drink in a day?  That means at least half of the water we interact with is still loaded with yuck.

My temporary solution was shower filters where possible, but they still don’t do a great job if any at removing the chlorine and fluoride.  And that doesn’t do anything for the bathwater for the baby (or any of the rest of us who enjoy a good epsom salt soak).  It also meant our fancy pot filler and icemaker and all of the bathroom faucets were still not clean.  That meant the pot filler wasn’t even useable - it made food taste like it had been cooked in hose water.

So I went on the hunt to find the ultimate whole house water filter.  I knew it needed to filter out the following:

  • Chromium-6
  • Arsenic
  • Radioactive substances (like radium, uranium, thorium, and radon, plus those from nuclear power plants)
  • Mercury
  • Copper
  • Chlorine
  • Trihalomethanes
  • Haloacetic acids
  • Giardia
  • Perfluorooctanoic acid
  • Bisphenol A (BPA):
  • Nitrate
  • Fluoride
  • VOCs
  • Lead
  • Heavy metals
  • Pesticides
  • SVCs
  • Water disinfectants - Chlorine & Chloramine
  • Inorganic non-metallics
  • Herbicides
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • PFOA
  • PFOS
  • Micro-organisms
  • 1,4 Dioxane
  • Micro Plastics
I also wanted it to keep or replenish the healthy minerals - especially potassium and magnesium.

Then I learned about something called structured water.  I’ve got a whole post just on what this is here.  In a nutshell, because of the cleaning process and the water storage facilities, the water coming through our pipes is in a chaotic, haphazard shape that our bodies can’t use effectively.  In order for our bodies to use the water, it has to change it back to a natural, energetic, hexagonal structure.  This takes work for our bodies to do, and leaves us feeling depleted just from drinking water.

When you get water from a spring or a flowing stream, the rocks and landscape do the work of structuring the water and giving it that energetic shape our bodies need.

As I learned about this, I knew this one particular feature was going to be a game-changer.  Imagine - every sip of water you drink, every time you wash your hands, take a shower, cook a meal, wash your clothes or dishes… you are exposing your body to water molecules in a format that adds life and vitality to your body.  Can you picture how great you would feel?

Does this unicorn water filter actually exist, Jill?

Why yes, my friend, it actually does!  This water filter takes out all of the yuck, replenishes the good minerals, naturally alkalizes the water, and structures it!  Oh, AND - the filter media and cartridges actually cost less than most other regular water filters and you don’t have to change them as frequently.

So we got this majestic beauty installed recently, and let me share with you what I’ve noticed so far.

  1. The water tastes amazing!  And it makes my morning coffee routine just a little simpler because I don’t have to go to the fridge to get filtered water - the water coming out of our kitchen sink faucet is just as clean and tastes delightful.  (The downside is you’ll realize just how crappy the water is everywhere else.  The good news is they have a purification pod to take with you on the go!
  2. I really do have more energy.  I find myself actively taking on more projects and seeing them through to completion, and actively looking for opportunities to get in a little more exercise.  I’m waking up earlier too.
  3. At the moment, I seem to get body odor a lot faster.  While this seems like it would be a negative, I am seeing it as a sign that the water is helping me detoxify more effectively, and that means that I stink more right now.  I don’t expect this to be a permanent situation, but I’ll keep you posted on how long the smelly detox phase takes for me.
I added some words with intention to the tank as well, which has been shown in the experiments done by Masaro Emoto in his book Hidden Messages in Water to have a positive, structuring effect on the water as well.  Check out what I did and why here.
